Abstract

Children with visual disabilities are children who experience visual impairments that have a direct or indirect impact on their development. Based on these characteristics, it can affect the independence of children with visual disabilities. Therefore, maximum support is needed for children with visual disabilities so that they are able to develop their independence abilities.This study aims to 1) Know and describe the independence of children with visual disabilities who attend SLBN Jember 2) Know and describe the support provided by parents in developing the independence of children with visual disabilities who attend SLBN Jember. The research uses a type of qualitative research in which the research subjects are determined through purposive sampling and uses observation, interview, and documentation techniques to collect data. In order to analyze the data, researchers used the Miles and Huberman model. Meanwhile, to determine the validity of the data, researchers used source triangulation techniques and technical triangulation. As for what researchers obtained in this study, namely that the high or low independence of children with visual disabilities can be influenced by internal and external factors, Meanwhile, the support provided by the family, especially the parents, is influenced by several factors. So, it can be concluded that: 1) The independence of children with visual disabilities who attend SLBN Jember has not yet reached total independence. 2) The forms of support that parents provide to children with visual disabilities who attend SLBN Jember are emotional support, appreciation support, instrumental support, and information support
