Abstract

Mental retardation is a child who has below average intelligence, which is characterized by limited intelligence and inadequate social communication and has delays in intellectual, emotional, mental, attitude and behavior. In this case, the application of occupational therapy is needed to increase independence and optimize the abilities of mentally retarded children. Based on these conditions, this research was conducted with the aim of describing the application of occupational therapy to train eating skills in mentally retarded children and what factors influence the application of occupational therapy to train eating skills in mentally retarded children in Jember State SLB. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The results of this study indicate that: 1) The application of occupational therapy to train eating skills in mentally retarded children at the Jember State SLB uses 5 steps, namely: the assessment step, the assessment step, the relationship formation step, the goal setting step and the last step is the use of occupational therapy. 2) The inhibiting factor for the application of occupational therapy in training eating skills in mentally retarded children at the Jember State SLB is the lack of occupational therapists and special rooms for implementing occupational therapy. while the supporting factors are the active participation of parents in the learning activities of mentally retarded children
